Request an estimateDoes my brick wall need repointing, and can it wait?
Brick repair in San Angelo usually means repointing, where we cut out the worn mortar between your bricks and fill the joints with fresh mortar so the wall is sound and tight again. Mortar joints typically last more than 25 years, depending on how exposed the wall is and what mortar went in, while the bricks themselves can last well over 100, so an older house often needs new joints long before it needs new brick.
Most people call after they notice mortar they can scrape out with a car key, joints sitting back from the brick face, or a thin crack running along the edge of a brick. Some of that can wait and some can't, and I'll show you which is which on your own wall. The price mostly turns on how much wall needs new joints, how deep the old mortar has worn, how high we have to work and how closely we need to match an older color. The schedule turns on the size of the area and, if your house sits in one of the city's historic districts, the approval you need before we start. You get your own number at the on-site estimate, once I've seen the wall.
How we handle brick repair and repointing
I start by looking at the joints with you, and if a few hairline cracks are all you've got, I'll tell you honestly that they can wait. When we do repoint, we put a small test patch in a hidden spot first so you can see the color match before it goes on the whole wall, because the sand color and the kind of cement both change how a joint looks once it dries. Once you're happy with the patch, our crew cuts the worn mortar out of the joints, cleans them, packs in the fresh mortar, tools the face to match the joints around it and cleans the brick before we leave.
Brick walls sit next to other masonry, and it often makes sense to look at all of it on the same visit. We also lay driveway pavers and handle retaining wall construction, so if the drive or a slope in the yard needs work too, one estimate can cover it.
Brick repair in San Angelo, permits and historic districts
Whether a repointing job on your house needs a city permit is a question for San Angelo's Building Permits & Inspections office, which handles permits and inspections for building projects in the city. When a job does need one, we handle the paperwork with that office and plan our work around the inspections. Historic districts add a step. If your property is in one of San Angelo's historic districts, any exterior restoration, alteration or rehabilitation needs a Certificate of Appropriateness before work begins, so put that approval in your schedule ahead of our start date. A like-for-like repair that uses the same material and design as the original, with no structural changes, may be decided by the city's planning director or someone they assign, and careful repointing is usually that kind of repair.
We're based in San Angelo and work across San Angelo and the cities around it, and on a lot of the brick houses we see here the bricks are fine and the joints are tired. So most of our brick repair in town is mortar work, done to match what's already on the wall.
Why call us for brick repair
The owner looks at every wall
I come out to look at each job myself, and I work on site with our crew once it starts. The person who told you what's wrong with your wall is the one making sure it gets fixed.
Repointing is what we do most
Repointing and brick repair are what we're best known for, and I learned the trade under a mason who made me tear out any joint that wasn't straight. We've done this work under our own name since 2021, with the same habits.
Licensed and fully insured crew
We're licensed and fully insured. The crew that cuts out your old joints is the same one that repoints them and cleans up, so you deal with one outfit from estimate to finish.
Historic district approval flagged early
If your house is in a San Angelo historic district, I raise the city's approval at the estimate so it's on your calendar before we start. Nobody wants a scaffold sitting in the yard waiting on paperwork.

Frequently asked questions
How do I tell if the mortar in my brick wall needs repointing?
Mortar needs repointing when it has worn back more than 1/4 inch from the brick face, crumbles, has holes or gaps, shows hairline cracks, or has cracks opening between the brick and the mortar. Check your walls against that list, and take a few photos of the worst spots so we can see them before the visit.
Do hairline cracks in brick mortar need to be fixed right away?
Usually not, because many brick walls, including cavity and veneer walls, can handle the bit of extra moisture that minor cracks let in. If you've only got a few, you can plan the work on a normal schedule, but wider or longer cracks are worth having us look at in person.
What kind of mortar should be used to repoint an older brick house?
The new mortar should be equal to or lower in strength than the original, because a mortar that's too strong can make the face of the brick break off, which masons call spalling. Ask any mason how their mix compares with your old mortar, since the wrong one can damage brick beyond repair.
How much does brick repair cost in San Angelo?
It depends on the wall, so we give you a price after we've seen it rather than over the phone. Hard old mortar that's slow to cut out, a second-story wall that needs scaffolding and an unusual mortar color all push the price up, while a small, easy-to-reach section keeps it down, and you'll have the number in hand before you decide anything.
Should I repoint the whole wall or just the bad joints?
Usually the whole affected area, because it's hard to tell which joints are actually letting water in, and the standard industry advice is to repoint every joint in that part of the wall. That means the stretch showing wear, not the whole house, with the new mortar matched to what's left, which is what the test patch is for.
What is the best way to pick a mason for repointing brick?
Ask to see their past repointing jobs, because a good bricklayer isn't always good at repointing, and it's a different skill. Ask which tools they'll use to cut out the old mortar too, since power saws on thin brick joints almost always chip the brick edges.
Other work we do around brick walls
Driveway pavers
If your driveway has settled, cracked or just looks tired next to freshly repointed brick, pavers give you a surface that can be lifted and reset in sections later.
Retaining wall construction
When a slope in your yard keeps washing out or a garden bed is leaning, a properly built retaining wall holds the soil back and keeps it off your walks.
