What does stone masonry on my house involve?

Stone masonry in San Angelo covers two kinds of work. One is setting new stone on a wall or house. The other is repointing old stone, where we dig the worn mortar out of the joints and pack in fresh. Masterwork San Angelo Concrete & Masonry does both in San Angelo, TX and the cities around it.

Most calls start with something you can see, like mortar sanding out of the joints, a stone that's worked loose, or a plan to face a wall or the front of the house in stone, which our stone veneer installation page covers in more detail. The price depends on how much wall there is, the stone you choose, how it gets set and how much old mortar has to come out. The schedule depends on any drainage repair that has to come first and, when the job needs a city permit, on the inspections. I'll walk the wall with you at the estimate and give you your own figure from there.

How we handle stone masonry, start to finish

I start by looking at the wall and the stone with you, and at where the water goes, because if a leaking downspout has washed the mortar out, the downspout has to be replaced and the drainage fixed before any mortar work, so plan for that first. On new stone we choose between anchored setting, where metal ties hold each stone to the wall, and adhered setting, where the stone is bonded on, by what the wall and the stone call for and not out of habit. On old walls we clear the worn mortar out of the joints and repack them with mortar softer than the stone itself. We clean the stone with non-acid cleaners and leave your yard the way we found it.

Plenty of houses mix stone with brick, so when the brick joints are going too, we take care of them as brick pointing on the same visit. A crack that runs straight through stone and mortar alike can mean the trouble is underneath, and in that case foundation repair comes before any work on the face of the wall.

Stone masonry permits and older walls in San Angelo

In San Angelo, the Building Permits and Inspections division handles permits and inspections for building work. Its forms include a permit for brick ledges, but they don't settle whether a stone job like yours needs one, so ask that office about your project before work starts. When the job does need a permit, we handle the paperwork with the city. City rules also say anyone doing permitted work has to be registered with the building official, so it's fair to ask any mason you're considering whether they show up on the city's registered contractors page.

Older buildings can add a step. The state keeps a listing of San Angelo's historic and architectural resources, and on some historic properties the Texas Historical Commission may have to review the work before it can go ahead, depending on the laws and designations that apply. We see plenty of older stone around San Angelo, so if your house has some age on it, I'll ask about its status at the estimate so any review happens before we start.

Why call us for stone masonry

  • The owner looks at every wall

I come out to look at each job, and I work on site with our crew. The person who sized up your wall is there when the mortar goes in.

  • Taught to redo crooked joints

I learned under an old-school mason who made me tear out joints that weren't straight and lay them again. We've been in business since 2021, and I still work that way.

  • Licensed, insured and inspection-ready

We're licensed and fully insured. On San Angelo jobs that need a permit, we plan our work around the city's inspections, so the inspector sees what they need to see before it's covered up.

  • You'll understand your own wall

Before we pick a fix, I'll show you which joints are failing and why. A repair that only looks good for a year isn't worth paying for, and I'd rather you know what you're buying.

Frequently asked questions

How much does stone veneer cost in San Angelo?

Installing stone veneer usually costs about $25 to $40 per square foot across the US. That's a national figure, not our price. On repointing, Park Service guidance favors raking old mortar out by hand with chisels because it's the least risk to historic stone, and that slow work makes up a big share of the labor. You'll get your own figure at the estimate.

Should stone on my wall be anchored or adhered?

The wall and the stone decide it, not the mason's preference. Stone industry training points to the project details, how the wall is supported, the load it carries and the type of stone. I'll tell you which method we'd use on yours and why.

What mortar should be used to repoint a stone wall?

Use mortar softer than both the stone and the original mortar. Harder mortar can damage the stones as the wall heats and cools. Softer mortar keeps the wear in the joints, and joints are a lot easier to replace than stone.

Who handles building permits in San Angelo?

The city's Building Permits and Inspections division handles permits and inspections. Plans and documents go in, get reviewed and get approved online, and the city won't process an application until it's signed and dated. When your stone job needs a permit, we take care of that paperwork.

How do I clean an old stone wall without damaging it?

Use a cleaner with no acid in it. Guidance written for the stone buildings at the San Antonio Missions recommends non-acid products because limestone is sensitive to acid. It's a good habit on any old stone.

What causes mortar to crumble out of a stone wall?

Mostly time. Masonry wears as it ages, mostly at the mortar joints, and repointing renews exactly that part. If it's washing out faster in one spot, look for water from a downspout or poor drainage, which gets fixed before any new mortar goes in.

  • Brick pointing

If the brick on your house is losing mortar the same way the stone is, pointing renews those joints so the whole wall wears evenly again.

  • Foundation repair

Cracks that run through stone and mortar alike, or a wall that's leaning or pulling away, often start below ground, and new mortar won't hold until that's fixed.
