What goes into putting stone veneer on a wall in San Angelo?

Stone veneer installation means bonding natural stone, or manufactured stone made from concrete, to an inside or outside wall with mortar, and Masterwork San Angelo Concrete & Masonry does this work for homes across San Angelo, TX and the cities around it.

Most people call because they want the front of the house, a porch or a fireplace faced in stone, and the first thing I ask about isn't the stone. It's the wall it's going on, because stone is heavy and it holds any water that gets behind it, so a weak or rotting wall has to be dealt with before anything covers it. The price moves with the square footage, natural or manufactured stone, how much the wall needs before we start and how many windows, doors and corners we have to work around. The schedule mostly turns on that prep work. I'll give you a figure for your own wall when I come out and look at it.

How we do stone veneer installation

I start with the wall itself, because industry guidance puts adhered stone only on sound walls, not on ones that are deteriorating or on EIFS, the foam-and-stucco finish some houses have. If the wall needs work, we fix it first. On an outside wall over framing, the water barrier goes up next. That's the wrap behind the stone. Industry guidance also calls for flashing, metal strips that shed water, at every opening and along the stone's bottom edge, and we take the barrier and flashing seriously because that's where veneer jobs usually go wrong. Over old brick or block, one maker's guide has the mortar and face checked, then the surface cleaned by pressure washing, acid washing or blasting, with lath going on first if it won't come clean. After that comes the scratch coat, the first layer of mortar, and then we set the stone, fill the joints and clean up. Indoor stone skips the flashing unless it'll be exposed to water, and then we treat it like outside work.

Sometimes the wall you want faced in stone isn't built yet. A stone-faced yard wall usually starts as one of our concrete block walls, and on a new addition, foundation block wall installation gives the stone a solid wall to sit on. When we build the wall ourselves, I already know what's behind the stone.

Planning stone veneer installation in San Angelo

Whether stone veneer on your house needs a city permit is a question for San Angelo's Building Permits & Inspections office, and I'd rather they answer it than guess. If your job does need one, we handle the paperwork with that office and plan our work around the inspections. City rules say anyone doing permit work in San Angelo has to be registered with the building official, so that's worth asking any installer about. You can reach the office at 325-657-4210, Monday through Friday, 8 am to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.

Here we see a lot of brick houses where owners want stone on a porch, a chimney or part of the front, and framed walls where stone goes over wood sheathing once the siding comes off. We do both kinds of job all over San Angelo and the cities around it, and the wall underneath decides the method every time.

Why call us for stone veneer

  • The owner looks at every wall

I come out to look at each job, and I work on site with our crew when the stone goes on. So the person who judged your wall is the one standing in front of it later.

  • Trained to redo crooked joints

I learned under an old-school mason who made me tear out joints that weren't straight and lay them again, and I've run this business since 2021 so I could keep working that way. On veneer, that habit shows in the joints you'll look at every day.

  • Licensed and fully insured

We're licensed and fully insured. That matters when a crew is up on scaffolding against your house.

  • Built to San Angelo's adopted codes

The city has adopted the International Residential Code and the International Building Code, so building work here follows them. We plan stone work with those codes in mind, not just the look.

Frequently asked questions

How much does stone veneer installation cost per square foot?

Installing stone veneer across the US usually costs about $25 to $40 per square foot. That's the national market for the installed work, not our price, and where your wall lands depends on the stone and how much prep it needs. I'll measure yours and price it on site.

Does manufactured stone veneer fade in the sun?

Natural stone won't fade in sunlight, but cheaper imported manufactured stone can start to fade after 10 to 15 years on a wall with intense southern exposure. If you want manufactured stone on a sunny wall, ask for UV-resistant pigments, which quality modern makers use. I'll point out which of your walls take the most sun when I'm there.

What causes stone veneer to fail?

Water getting behind the stone is the most common cause of failure one stone maker names. Over wood-based sheathing, that maker recommends two independent layers of water-resistive barrier behind the stone, so ask any installer how those layers will drain water away from the wall. It's a fair question to ask me, too.

How do I choose a stone veneer installer in San Angelo?

Pick someone who can show they've done this work well, because industry guidance says that when adhered stone has problems, workmanship in the field is usually the source. You can ask for the Concrete Masonry & Hardscape Association's Certified MSV Installer credential, MSV being manufactured stone veneer, or for documented experience on jobs of a similar size and scope. Ask about insurance as well, and pass on anyone who won't talk about what's behind the stone.

How long does stone veneer installation take?

Most of the schedule goes into getting the wall ready, and the rest turns on the wall's size and the weather while the mortar sets. A trade group's guide calls for protecting fresh stone work at 40° F or colder, and from drying too fast above 100° F, so very cold or very hot days can slow things down. Ask any crew how they'll protect the work in that kind of weather.

How do I apply for a building permit in San Angelo?

You email the application and your drawings to the city's permit office, and you pay the fees when the permit is issued. On our jobs, that's the part we take off your plate.

  • Concrete block walls

Want a garden wall, planter or privacy wall finished in stone? A block wall built straight and solid is usually the best thing to put the stone on.

  • Foundation block wall installation

Adding a room or a new structure that'll be faced in stone later? The block foundation wall underneath has to carry it, so it's worth getting right first.
